Coaches, players excited about Pete Hanna Center

Samford University unveiled its new $32 million Pete Hanna Center to the media on Wednesday and it was hard to tell who was happiest - the two basketball coaches who now have a state-of-the-art facility to recruit to, the athletics director who has a showcase for the program, or women's shooting guard Megan Wilderotter.

"We have a bathroom in our locker room," said Wilderotter, a junior from New Orleans. "I know that sounds really weird, because most locker rooms should have bathrooms, but we didn't have one at Seibert.

"The locker room is like quadrupled in size. I personally love Seibert, but now that we have this - it's great."

The facility, which is scheduled to be open for its first athletics events on Monday at 5:30 for a women's and men's basketball exhibition doubleheader, features 5,000 chair-back seats on two levels.

South Africa: The Art of Rewarding Appropriately

THE furore over the Premier Soccer League (PSL) bonuses again raises the dilemmas of executive remuneration and incentives. An executive's ability to lead, to inspire and act creatively, to learn from failure, not to hide behind policy and plan or others' patronage, distinguishes executives who make a valuable difference from the mediocre and those who prefer things to be safe and familiar.

Share options and bonus schemes are intended to ensure that organisations get the best talent. "Experts" claim to define what and how value will be created, as if the future were predictable.

Gogoi now rushes into award for cricketers

Two days ago, as Team India defeated Pakistan in the first one-day international cricket match at the Nehru Stadium here, the first thing that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi did was to declare a cash award of Rs 1 lakh to each of the Indian team members.

What is surprising is that the Assam Government is yet to disburse cash awards that Gogoi had announced for each of the 148 players from Assam who had won medals in the 33rd National Games held here in February.

Assam had won 38 gold, 53 silver and 27 bronze medals in the National Games and became the overall third best team, Gogoi had announced Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh each for the gold, silver and bronze medallists, respectively, in individual events. For team events, the awards announced were Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh.

Canadian Olympic athletes to be paid for medal wins

Canadian athletes that reach the podium at any future Olympic Games will be financially compensated up to $20,000 per medal, officials said Monday.

The new Athlete Excellence Fund was announced in Ottawa by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC).

Canadian athletes will receive $20,000 per gold medal won at any Olympic Games, said the COC.

Silver winners will be compensated $15,000 per medal and bronze winners will earn $10,000.

"We've had a program of subsidizing athletes in the past but we've never recognized the medal wins with specific dollars," COC president Michael Chambers told CTV Newsnet on Monday.

He said countries like the U.S., Australia, England, France and Spain already give their athletes money if they win at the Olympics.

Brown joins receiving line

Bill Belichick maintained all along that there would be a role for receiver Troy Brown with the Patriots. Yet as Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and Donté Stallworth exploded onto the scene this year, it was hard to see where.

Belichick, despite his team being stocked with six receivers, proved to be true to his word.

With Brown's time on the physically unable to perform list ending at 4 p.m. yesterday, the team essentially had three options: 1. add Brown to the roster; 2. place him on season-ending injured reserve; 3. release him.

The Patriots went with the first option, activating the longtime fan favorite and waiving rookie defensive lineman Kareem Brown, the fourth-round draft choice out of the University of Miami who could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
