Madison left in the dark for big game

You've fumed at the NFL Network. You've vented about Charter.

So now what, Green Bay Packers fan? If you're a Madison cable subscriber, you're not going to be able to watch Thursday night's game -- quite possibly your team's biggest game of the regular season -- from your living room.

But you've exhausted your rage on the involved parties, so what's left to do besides go out and find a place to watch the game?

Maybe while you're doing that, you can think of people in the Green Bay, Appleton and Milwaukee areas that aren't going to be so inconvenienced.

That's because NFL broadcasting rules give those markets the right to show the game on over-the-air television stations. WFRV/Ch. 5 bought the rights in the Green Bay/Fox Valley market; WISN/Ch. 12 was the highest bidder in Milwaukee.

South Africa: Business Must Play Greater Role in Soccer

Businesses should play a greater role in the soccer industry in South Africa ahead of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and beyond, says Chief Executive Officer of the GEDA Keith Khoza.

"When you look at soccer you must look at it as an economic sector that has great potential for job and wealth creation, and there is definitely a role for business to play in funding the sport and investing in the sport," said the Gauteng Economic Development Agency's (GEDA) CEO, at a seminar on the role of business in soccer.

Grass-roots program for a blossoming sport

LOWELL -- Up until two decades ago, Peter Pinto was a hockey referee who didn't know very much about lacrosse.

But that changed in a hurry once Pinto had an opportunity to officiate a few lacrosse games.

"I found lacrosse through hockey," said Pinto, 52, who grew up in Somerville. "I started officiating lacrosse about 20 years ago and the sport became an instant addiction. I no longer officiate hockey.

"Lacrosse is such a great game to watch. It's quick. It's a tough sport. The most impressive thing about the sport is the ball movement. Watching the way players pass the ball. To be running as fast as you can and zip the ball while on the move to a teammate like it's a laser is really something to see."

Eventually, officiating lacrosse games turned into a labor love, one that Pinto wanted to share with as many young players as possible.

La Russa pleads guilty to drunken driving

West Palm Beach, Fla. — St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa pleaded guilty to driving under the influence Wednesday, eight months after police found him asleep inside his running sport utility vehicle at a stop light and smelling of alcohol.

La Russa said that he had decided to plead guilty to the misdemeanor because it was in the best interest of all concerned.

Waller leads Hills by example

WAYNE -- Mike Roman watched Tim Waller play linebacker, how he pursued the ball, how he hit people. Then he realized he wasn't the only one watching, that his teammates, too, were trying to emulate his Wayne neighbor's football instincts. But while they all strove to match Waller's level, the bar had been set fairly high.
