Warriors want to drink from big cup
The St. Charles West Warriors hockey team is the first from St. Charles County to advance to the finals in one of the three Mid-States Club Hockey Association playoff tiers four times.After three trips to the Wickenheiser Cup finals in this decade, the Warriors were 0-3 in trips to the finals. But last season, they beat Clayton in a shootout to capture the Founders Cup, the county's first Mid-States postseason hardware.But this year's team has higher aspirations. Like challenging for the Suburban North Conference title and earning the right to compete in the highest playoff tier: the Challenge Cup. First-year head coach Brad Schneider and his two assistants, Bill Heisse and Harris Schiff, want to help the Warriors get to Scottrade Center."It's a nice honor, it's always nice to win that last game, but these seniors had played for the Wickenheiser Cup for two years so they were used to being at the (Scottrade Center) competing for something bigger," Schneider said."As far as the coaching staff goes, that (Challenge) is our goal.
Wood is first-team All-American
• Penn State's Kiersten Wood, a senior from Warwick, was named to the NCAA Division I All-America first team in field hockey last week.
Wood, a midfielder, had six goals and five assists for 17 points for the Nittany Lions (16-8).
Penn State (16-8) beat No. 3 Maryland and No. 2 Wake Forest before falling to No. 1 North Carolina 3-0 in the NCAA title game last Sunday in College Park, Md.
Wood was one of four Lancaster County players named to the All-America team, which is voted on by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Temple's Alli Lokey, a senior from Elizabethtown, was a second-team selection. Lokey, a midfielder, led the Owls with 18 goals and 10 assists for 46 points.
Iowa's Meghan Beamesderfer and Michigan's Paige Laytos, both sophomores from Warwick, were named to the third team.
Singer '09: Headaches the norm for NFLers
I was sitting on the couch watching football this past Turkey Day when my four-year-old cousin stumbled into the room. After tumbling onto the couch and staring at the screen for a while, she uttered the following words:
"Why do they play? They run and then" - she clapped her hands as a tackle was made on the screen - "they die."
Those are awfully philosophical thoughts coming from someone who still wears diapers, I thought. She should eat some more turkey. But instead, I decided I'd try to explain my thinking to her.
"Well, they get a lot of money to play. And some of them enjoy it," I said, looking at her to gauge her approval.
She scrunched her nose and shook her head in that spastic way little kids do. "I don't like it," she said.
Trial date to be set for Vick on state charges
The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback was not expected to attend a hearing in Surry County Circuit Court to schedule his trial on two felony dogfighting counts. Vick is being held at a jail in Warsaw, Va., after unexpectedly turning himself in Nov. 19 to begin serving time for a federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction. Vick faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 10 in the federal case. The two state charges - beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs, and engaging in or promoting dogfighting - also are punishable by up to five years in prison each. Vick's lawyers have indicated they will fight the state charges on the grounds he can't be convicted twice of the same crime. Vick and three co-defendants, who also face state charges, pleaded guilty to the federal charge in U.S.
Romani puts a pretty face on Rotary, but music lets it down
It certainly isn't the glitziest service organization on the planet. Nor one of the most cutting-edge. But its rather humble image notwithstanding, Evanston-based Rotary International is still a worthy global group of concerned citizens who wishes to make the world a better place. For the last several years, Rotary has entrusted Romani Bros./Chicago with the task of helping the world at large better understand what RI is all about. Denny Hebson, a Romani partner, once jokingly noted that many people steadfastly cling to the notion Rotary is nothing more than a bunch of old men who gather for lunch every month. But the Rotary campaign with the tag line "Rotary. Humanity in Motion" that Romani has been evolving clearly suggests otherwise. Each of Romani's two newest executions comes at the aforementioned theme in quite different fashion.
Tulsa falls to rival
Oklahoma City scores game-winner shorthanded.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City entered the game with the Central Hockey League's top power-play unit. Indeed, special teams play proved the difference, but it was a shorthanded goal that the Blazers used to beat Tulsa.
Garrett Prosofsky lit the lamp 1:47 into the final period, depositing the puck into a wide open net, as the Blazers nudged the Oilers 4-2 before a crowd of 8,136 Sunday night at the Ford Center. The loss was Tulsa's third straight and fifth in six games.
"It seems like a roller coaster," said Tulsa coach Butch Kaebel. "We do really good things and then really bad things. Frenchy (Kevin St. Pierre) made some great saves and then the third goal came on a mistake. Every mistake is being magnified.
